Poured with rain but enjoyed it. Everyone very friendly. (Gaye and Graham, Leicester)
Croeso! Welcome!
The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway is a bit different......
Your journey takes about an hour, but you won’t be on the train for most of the time!
We’ll take you on a short train ride, then we stop at the Engine Sheds where you get to climb into the cabs of the locomotives and see how things work. Find out about the narrow gauge railways of Porthmadog and how they became famous around the world with your free visitor guide.
Thought our railway was small? Try the miniature version at the Engine Sheds. If you haven't visited us before, click here to find out what one family thought.
When do trains run?
The railway is closed now for the Winter but will open again on 27th March 2010 and run every day until Autumn. Have a look at our timetable for full details of which engines will be in service each day.
We've been busy planning lots of special events for 2010 including Easter Bunnies, a Teddy Bears Picnic and our May Bank Holiday Gala.
A whole family can ride up and down all day for just £15.00 - full fare details are here. For a small extra charge, adults can get a driver's eye view and ride in the cab of the engine.
How to find us
Porthmadog (WHR) station is at the top of the High Street, close to the mainline railway station. There's plenty of level car parking nearby. Have a look at the map for more details.
Most of the site is level, and there's a wheelchair accessible carriage on every train. Click here for more practical information.
About Us
The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway is run almost entirely by volunteers in their spare time. Maybe you'd like to join us, or just follow our progress from a distance?
The original Welsh Highland was one of the greatest white elephants of Wales's industrial history. It opened in 1922, and closed in 1937, lasting just 15 years. Read more about the history of our railway.
The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway is just one part of a project to restore the whole line through the mountains of Snowdonia. Another section is currently open, from Caernarfon to Hafod-y-Llyn.
The completed railway is due to open in full in the next year.
